I guess the real breakthrough moment for establishing yaad came to me when I re-visited my city - Pune, India - for the first time since my move to England in 2017. As I wandered the streets, I realised that my whole life I had taken for granted the sheer skill and beauty of the many artisans in my home-city. Whether it was the hammering of copper in the narrow gullies of Tambat Ali, or the carving of reclaimed teak wood in the Old City Market, I couldn’t help but stand in awe and admire the beauty of artisanal craftsmanship that had been sacredly passed from one generation to another.
My background is in architecture, so design is something that is always close to my heart. It’s this love for design combined with an unwavering desire to share the beauty of the crafts that I discovered on my return to India with the rest of the world that really set things in motion. I would spend hours with my sketchbook and draft designs of tables, jugs, platters and all kinds of homeware. On my next visit to India, I took that very sketchbook with me and shared my ideas with these artisans over hot glasses of chaii and coffee. As they say… the rest is history.
Welcome to yaad – which translates to memories in hindi – I hope that the love and warmth each product has been designed and made with can be felt in our products. Products that we hope can be part of the beautiful memories you create in your homes.
